Designed Using the Bar Standards Board Curriculum and Assessment Strategy
Once graduating from law school you will need to apply to one of the Inns of Court for membership. The BPC™ is ideal as an introductory course or as a revision aid for the bar course exams. Once you pass the bar course you will be called to the Bar of England and Wales.
The legal profession in England and Wales is split into two branches; solicitors and barristers. At this stage A-level/law students are exploring the unique world of the Bar, completing mini-pupillages and deciding whether to pursue a career at the Bar.
Upon deciding on the barrister route, aspiring barristers apply to enrol on the bar course to complete the vocational component which is a pre-requisite to become a barrister.
After successfully completing the bar course you are called to the Bar of England and Wales (graduation ceremony). The next stage is to secure pupillage with an Authorised Education and Training Organisation (AETO) such as chambers, in the final step to becoming a barrister.
After completing pupillage which is a recognised period of training by the Bar Standards Board, you will qualify as a practising barrister at the Bar of England and Wales.
at the Bar of England and Wales.
Based on the latest data from the Bar Standards Board (BSB) and the Bar Council Pupil Survey 2026, here is a breakdown of who actually secures pupillage — and how many attempts it takes. A strong Bar course performance is one of the few signals you fully control.
Oxbridge & Russell Group make up ~65% of the cohort.
Outstanding graduates secure pupillage at ~70–75%. A 'Competent' grade drops you to ~8–12%.
Over 60% of pupils need two or more application cycles. Persistence pays.
Oxbridge and Russell Group graduates make up roughly 65% of the cohort.
~75% of Outstanding graduates secure pupillage. Drop to Competent and it falls to ~8–12%.
While 37% secure pupillage in their first round, over 60% need two or more cycles.
Six pressure points every bar course student walks into.
The greatest challenge students face on the bar course is the volume of material they are required to absorb and recall for 10+ exams during a pressured time window of 7/8 months.
The low pass rate students face on the bar course which was recorded as low as 35.33% – ICCA 2022.
Prior to the bar course, students' advocacy experience is often limited to mooting and debating competitions.
Very few bar students have conducted legal writing in the form of drafting and opinion writing during university.
Exposure to exam-style questions such as Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Single Best Answers (SBAs) is rare.
Those hoping to secure pupillage will be seeking a minimum overall classification of 'Very Competent' which leaves a small margin for academic error and performance.
